Nia

I was in over my head. I rushed to get the twins dressed. The last time I left them here with James, Jerrod acted like it was the end of the world. I put them both in their car seats, raced out of the house, strapped them in securely, jumped in the driver’s seat and pulled off. I knew taking the twins was going to get me murdered but what other choice did I have.

The twins and I sat in the dimly lit parking lot. I was nervous and afraid. I never should have opened this door again knowing how much agony it cost me. I watched as he got out of his Cadillac with his nice suit on and expensive shoes. My husband’s picture came across my screen and I ignored his call.

"Good evening beautiful," he said as he slid into the passenger seat. He still had a bruised face from Jerrod. I wished my husband would open his eyes.

"Have you put any thought into what I said?" he asked. I looked down as Jerrod was calling me again. "You know better than to answer that! Nia, don't act like I won't kill you and drop your babies off on your doorstep."

I swallowed hard, remembering an old saying my mother used to say: let sleeping dogs lie. And that's what I should have done with him.

"Your time is up Nia, I need to know your answer. It was because of you that I am able to live this extravagant life." He held his arms out and let his watch bling.

"Could you give me a little more time please?" I begged him. He pulled his phone out and tapped on his calendar.

"You have seventy-two hours, or I'm coming to your ranch-style home where your precious family stays and it won't be pretty." He rubbed his hand down the side of my face and I cringed. I couldn't move until I watched him pull off. My phone rang again with Jerrod's face, I cleared my throat.

"Hello."

"Hey where are you?"

"I'm on the way back. I took the twins for a walk. I've been thinking about making a lifestyle change and lose a few pounds," I lied into the phone.

"Aww baby, I can help you with that. Come on home, I have dinner ready."

Before leaving, I gave the twins a bottle apiece so they wouldn't start crying once I pulled off.

I could barely drive from the tears stinging my eyes. I've prayed but they seem to go unanswered. I can't tell my husband about my past because he will never look at me the same. I couldn't imagine my life without Jerrod and my kids, but I would die before I brought harm to my doorstep. Jerrod made matters worse when he put his hands on him.

I pulled in the driveway and checked myself in the mirror. "Shoot!" I said to myself because my eyes were so red I knew he was going to ask me what was wrong. I rummaged through my purse looking for my Visine.
